About PDF page numbers

This free browser tool adds consistent numbering to contracts, reports, handouts, and other documents. Customize the position, starting value, and number-only or number-with-total format for easier printing and reference.

All work happens locally in your browser, protecting privacy and avoiding upload delays.

Common uses

  • Number contracts, reports, and papers before printing.
  • Add continuous numbering after merging documents.
  • Show page and total counts so readers can verify completeness.

Usually, merge PDFs first and then number the combined document. Add a text watermark if you also need a copyright notice.

What to check before numbering

Specific limits

Process one PDF of up to 50 MB at a time. Every page is numbered, so a cover cannot be skipped. Choose from six positions, use a whole-number starting value of 0 or more, and select either a number or number / last-number format. Labels use a fixed 12 pt size about 32 pt from the edge.

When processing can fail

Password-protected or encrypted files cannot be opened. A damaged file, a .pdf file whose contents are not actually PDF, or a very complex document that exhausts browser memory can also fail. If an existing header or footer occupies the chosen spot, processing may succeed but the new label can overlap it; generate again in another position.

Example: number a merged proposal

Suppose three attachments have been merged into a 12-page proposal. Choose bottom right, start at 1, and number + total. The first page should read 1 / 12, page six 6 / 12, and the last page 12 / 12, giving reviewers an unambiguous reference.

How to verify the download

  • Confirm the download name ends in -numbered.pdf and its page count matches the source.
  • Open at least the first, a middle, and the final page to check the sequence and total.
  • Zoom into the chosen corner and make sure the label does not cover a signature, footer, or crop mark before printing.

Frequently asked questions

QWill my PDF be uploaded to a server?

No. Page numbers are added entirely in your browser, so the PDF never leaves your device.

QWhere can page numbers be placed?

Choose from six positions: top or bottom, aligned left, center, or right.

QCan numbering start at a custom value?

Yes. Set any starting number. The number-plus-total format displays values such as 3 / 10.

QWill page numbers change existing content?

No. Numbers are overlaid on each page while the original content and page count stay unchanged.

QCan I process an encrypted PDF?

No. Unlock password-protected PDFs before adding them.

QDo I need to sign up or pay?

No. The tool is free, requires no account, and adds no watermark.
